EXPERIENCE
New York City Campaign Finance Board
Press Secretary and Director of Education July 1994-January
1997
-
Created and implemented initiatives to
increase awareness of the Campaign Finance Board (CFB) among the press,
public, and potential candidates, markedly increasing off election year
coverage of the agency's work.
-
Targeted outreach to areas with little
knowledge of the CFB, especially in less affluent communities where CFB
public funding offers significant benefits for grass roots candidacies,
and where greater access to information can help mobilize voter participation.
-
Directed and publicized expansion of CFB
public disclosure services, including its computerized data analysis and
comparison of campaign finance information that have become a national
model. Developed computer program to enable easy and unprecedented access
to information about the sources of candidates' financial support. As a
result of plans I put in place, this program is now on
the web.
-
Coordinated lobbying efforts at city and
state levels for reform legislation on contribution and campaign finance
disclosure.
-
Utilized public access television resources
to produce CFB public service announcements free of charge.
-
Ran hearings on CFB proposals including
a controversial plan to spur debates in municipal elections which generated
broader understanding of the CFB's positions. Modified editorial board
opposition to CFB plan.
-
Developed educational programming to focus
attention on issues related to democratizing elections.
